Ventana was hired to supply and install 125,000 square feet of custom designed window wall for the N° 9 W. Walton luxury residential high-rise located in the Gold Coast in downtown Chicago. Designed by Chicago’s Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture (HPA), the stone-clad tower stands 41 stories tall and contains only 67 condo units. The exterior is boasting a precast, limestone, granite, and glass enclosure and the interiors of the units are decked out in high-end finishes; JDL, the developer, calls the project “The first ‘six star’ condominium community in Chicago.”

Ventana’s unitized window wall system (MWS-150) was used on the project and the materials were imported from China. The glass was fabricated by SYP and the window wall units were made by Century. The slab edge covers are 15 inch tall single extrusions of custom shape. The typical window wall units on the project are between 10-12 feet tall, but the four story penthouse features 20 foot tall by 10 foot wide window wall units – the largest window wall units utilized in America to date. The penthouse units weigh over 4,000 lbs each and in order to install them, a custom made suction cup had to be used. Further, the window wall at the penthouse utilizes argon-filled, laminated, insulated glass units with a triple silver low-E coating on the number two surface for enhanced performance.
